I usually listen to music on my iPod while I’m at work. However I’d got a new phone so I thought I’d try out the music player on it. So I loaded up some tunes and away I went on my merry way delivering the day’s post. As I start to deliver to the old peoples home NWA come on, so I walk around the corridors with my head full of ‘Straight outta Compton’ at top volume. It sounds really great, louder than I usually remember it on headphones, and then I see one of the residents coming down the corridor to talk to me. Polite chap that I am, I remove the headphones. But NWA are still there. Turns out that the headphone’s are not completely in the socket and as the phone has something my iPod classic doesn’t (a speaker) the tunes have been ringing out all morning with me totally oblivious. Two pieces of luck though. 1) The resident is still quite a way down the hallway 2) it’s an instrumental part of the song.
Obviously I’m only telling you this cautionary tale as an excuse to play not one but two versions of the song. One by NWA, the other an acoustic version by Nina Gordon. Both very different, both very potty mouthed.
